ON A MISSION TO CHANGE THE COFFEE INDUSTRY

At Damn Good Coffee Company, we are on a mission to turn the coffee industry sustainable and circular. Transforming one of the world’s most traded commodities.

REDUCING EMISSIONS uP TO 67%

An impressive figure that we can proudly display directly on our products has been released in our new Impact Report for 2023, audited by the climate consultancy SuFu.

The focus of the report is solely on CARBON EMISSION REDUCTIONS. From farming to upcycling, it's all about the decarbonization of the coffee value chain.

A cup of conventional coffee emits 5.54 kg CO2e per kilo of green coffee. Thanks to the “Circular Coffee Way,” we have significantly slashed that figure to only 1.85 kg per kilo of green coffee. This has led to a reduction in CO2 emissions by 67% with our coffee sourced from Prodecoop in Nicaragua. The report also serves as our platform to preview what comes next in our battle to decarbonize.

THE MAIN ASPECTS OF THE CIRCULAR COFFEE WAY

The “Circular Coffee Way” is an entirely new way to look at the world of coffee, instilling circular principles in every aspect of our business. Using circular farming methods, including organic fertilizer and agroforestry principles. Applying zero waste methods to our packaging, even transforming coffee ground waste into value.

ORGANIC AGROFORESTRY

Based on coffee grown under shade trees in a forest environment with polyculture, only employing organic fertilizers. Following the principles of regenerative organic farming, fostering an entire ecosystem, improving soil health, biodiversity, water retention, and minimizing all chemical usage.

ZERO WASTE PACKAGING

We deliver our coffee in our bespoke reusable boxes and buckets, completely avoiding single-use plastic or aluminum. A box is 20 times more climate-friendly than a coffee bag made from any material. It’s our unique return system, like the renowned Danish equivalent for bottles.

RECYCLING COFFEE GROUNDS

Our recycling program transforms coffee grounds from useless waste into green energy, reducing emissions and preventing the release of even more harmful methane gases. The end products are fertilizer and biodiesel, with the latter serving as a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels.

CO2 FREE DELIVERY

We have based our logistics system to distribute coffee to our customers using an emissions-free transportation setup, relying on bicycle couriers and electric vans.

UPCYCLING

The Circular Collection consists of upcycled products made from the spent coffee grounds we pick-up weekly. This range includes liquid soap, beer, hand soap, and the chance to design your own furniture. Get the products here.

OFF-SETTING wHAT WE HAVEN’T REDUCED

Our climate-neutral pledge arises from offsetting the remaining emissions through Klimate.co. A next-generation offset portfolio encompassing a mix of "Bio Oil," "Biochar," and "Soil Sequestration," and best-in-class “Forestation” with instant effects.

ORGANIC AGROFORESTRY PIONEERS

All of our coffee originates from organic agroforestry, primarily sourced from Prodecoop in Nicaragua and El Olmo in Mexico. These two direct-trade partners constitute 85% of our volume. Both partners have undergone CO2 reduction audits at the farm level, by SuFu.

PRODECOOP

We get the majority of our Las Segovioas coffee from the Zacarias Padilla coop in San Juan De Rio Coco, in between the Madriz and Nueva Segovia regions. Like the rest of the cooperatives on Prodecoop, it’s 100% farmer owned. Prodeccop consists of 38 base cooperatives, 3.279 families, and over 16.000 people based in the regions of Esteli, Madriz, and Nueva Segovia. A part from being organic forestry pioneers they are leading the way in social impact initiatives, with a focus on empowering women and investing in programs like healthcare, education, and clean water access.

EL OLMO

The El Olmo farm In the state of Veracruz in Mexico. Is a true pioneer in a number of sustainable approaches, which include solar panels, organic compost, tree planting, shade-grown coffee, drying on raised beds, like the African tradition.A farm that want to give back to the local community, supporting tree-planting initiatives and provide surplus organic compost to local farmers, helping them to grow vegetables and seed fruit trees. Plus, with the excess energy generated from the solar panels.

OUR MISSION

Lasse Grosen and Casper Willer founded Damn Good Coffee Company back in 2018 in their hometown of Copenhagen.

Inspired by the thriving sustainability community and impact start-up scene in the Nordics home to world-class companies within oat milk, food waste, zero waste practices, plant-based food and more -  they decided the time had come to turn coffee sustainable as well.

Going for the places with the highest impact. Damn Good has based its concept on turning offices, co-living & co-working spaces circular sustainable.

The CIRCULAR COFFEE WAY™  is all about innovating around circular and sustainable practice from farm to cup, to upcycling coffee waste into new products.

Taking out carbon emissions from coffee has meant the invention of DAMN GOOD’s own zero waste logistics, carbon friendly operations and most notably the reductions in the emission hotspots within farming and milling. Based in coffee sourcing from a new sustainability framework.

The DAMN GOOD TEAM won’t stop until the global coffee industry has changed.
